Hellen Keller was stricken with scarlet fever as an infant and ended up blind and with no hearing. Her ability to speak didn’t occur until she was nearly adult. What area of the brain was severely affected by the scarlet fever?

Scarlet fever is caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, or rather the toxin secreted by the organism. This can cause meningitis and encephalitis. In the case of Helen Keller, permanent brain damage caused by the encephalitis affected her temporal lobe and occipital lobe which are responsible for processing hearing and visual information respectively.
