China first. In the 1850’s, the U.S forced the Treaty of Wanghia with the Chinese, which gave Americans the right to extraterritoriality and allowed Americans to trade in other cities of China, not just in Canton. At the same era, on Japan, the United States had just forced the closed Japan to open to world trade. Both actions resulted to migration of Japanese and Chinese into the United States, along with their beliefs, traditions, and cultures.
