The Thirteen Colonies were governed by three forms of government, the Provincial, Proprietary, and Charter. The Provincial Colony was governed by governors commissioned by the King. The Proprietary colonies were governed by governors appointed by Lord Proprietors. Charter governments were governed by people who secured a charter (letters patent) from the king, which gave grantees control of the land and powers to govern it.
