In this story, it is clear that the society in the tale view mental illnesses as something that can be cure simply with rest, an example of this is when the narrator was prescribed lots or resting time and taking a break from activity. As the story begins, it is clear the narrator is suffering some sort of mental breakdown, the symptoms get worse when being treated by her husbands medical opinions. Though she had her own opinions, women's thoughts were largely ignored in this time in history. The narrator also fears being sent to the doctor because she will be prescribed a rest cure, this shows the lack of faith in the medical community that people had.
