Problem 1

Part (a)

The top unlabeled side is y units long since y+y = 2y. The pieces along the top (y and y) must add to the horizontal side along the bottom (2y), so that things line up.

The side on the right is 3x units tall because x+2x = 3x. The vertical sides line up as well.

Once all exterior sides are labeled with their respective length, add up the lengths. Do not add in the dashed segment because it's not an exterior side.

x+y+2x+y+3x+2y = 6x+4y

If we knew what x and y were in terms of an actual number, then we could get an actual number for the perimeter. But since we don't know what x and y are, we leave the expression as it is.

Answer: 6x+4y

-------------------

Part (b)

The figure is already subdivided for us along the vertical dashed line. It breaks up into 2 smaller rectangles.

The rectangle on the left has area xy since we multiply length (variable y) with height (variable x).

The rectangle on the right has area 3xy for similar reasons.

Add up those two sub areas to get xy+3xy = 4xy as the total area. Like with the perimeter, we can't get an actual numeric value for the area since we don't know what x and y are.

Answer: 4xy

Problem 2 (RC-64)

2 hours 25 min is between 2 and 3 hours

Since the cost is the same in between any given hour, let's go for 2.5 which is the midpoint of 2 and 3.

Locate 2.5 on the x axis number line. Move straight up until reaching the curve. Then move horizontally to the left until reaching the y axis. You should arrive at 450.

Answer: $450

Problem 3 (RC-65)

Part (a)

Answer: 1/13

Reason: There are 4 queens out of 52 cards total. Therefore 4/52 = 1/13.

Or you can think of it like saying there's 1 queen of hearts out of 13 hearts cards, or 1 queen of spades out of 13 spades, etc.

-------------------------

Part (b)

Answer: 1/4

Reason: There's one suit of hearts out of 4 suits total.

-------------------------

Part (c)

Answer: 1/52

Reason: There's only one queen of hearts card, and it's out of 52 total.

If your teacher wants you to convert each fraction mentioned to decimal form, then be sure to do that.
