Convert them to the same form
4 out of 10 = 4/10 = 0.4
0.4 + 0.1 = 0.5
1 - 0.5 = 0.5
There is a 50% chance he is on time, or 5/10 or 0.5

Note that: 0.1 = 1/10

He is late 4/10 of the time.

Add 4/10 with 1/10

4/10 + 1/10 = 5/10

Those are the chances that he is either early or late.

To find if he is on time, subtract from the whole number

10/10 - 5/10 = 5/10

5/10, or 1/2 is his chance of showing up on time
