Which types of dilation are the given scale factors?

Select Expansion or Contraction to correctly describe the type of dilation for each given scale factor.

Scale Factors:

-5 (Expansion or Contraction?)

-1/4 (Expansion or Contraction?)

3.5 (Expansion or Contraction?)

6/7 (Expansion or Contraction?)

-5 is an expansion
-1/4 is a contraction
3.5 is an expansion
6/7 is a contraction

If the scale factor is larger than 1, then it's an expansion. If it's less than 1, then it's a contraction.

Answer: -5=Expansion

-1/4=Contraction

3.5 =Expansion

6/7 =Contraction

Explanation:

A dilation is a transformation which produces an image that is the same shape as the original, but of a different size.

  • If the modulus of scale factor is greater than 1, the image is an expansion.
  • If the modulus of factor is between 0 and 1, the image is a contraction.
  • If the modulus of factor is 1, the figure and the image are congruent.

Thus for scale factor -5 and 3.5 there is expansion and for scale factor -1/4 (-0.25) and 6/7 (0.857) there is contraction.
