Multiply equation (1) by 4 and equation (2) by 11, then subtract equation (2) from (1),

4(9x + 11y) - 11(3x + 4y) = 8 - 44

36x + 44y - 33x - 44y = -36

3x = -36

x = -12

From equation (2),

-3(12) + 4y = 4

-36 + 4y = 4

4y = 4 + 36

4y = 40

y = 10
