You need a system of equations. For the first statement, you should have y+8=x and for the second statement you should have 3y=x.
Then, you substitute the first equation into the second to get 3y=y+8. Solve for y and then substitute that value into y+8=x to find how many points school x has.

let x and y be number of points schhols X and Y have

x - y = 8
x = 3y
Plug x = 3y into the first equation:-

3y - y = 8
2y=8
y = 4

so X has 3*4 = 12 points

Answer X has 12 points and B has 4.
