Spain sold New Orleans to France because they needed money. Now that France owned New Orleans, they posed more of a threat to the United States because they were a strong world power at the time because French dictator Napoleon Bonaparte was taking over most of Europe so Jefferson was worried that Napoleon might try to take over the United States.
