Fungi and slime molds are decomposers that break down organic wastes and dead organisms into compounds used by plants for photosynthesis. Decomposers (or saprotrophs) recycle dead plants and animals into compounds such as carbon and nitrogen, which are then enriching the air, the water and the soil. By breaking down organic waste, they absorb nutrients from the organisms that they decompose.
