4(x - 3) - 5(x + 1) = 3

4x - 12 - 5x - 5 = 3

-12 - 5 - 3 = 5x - 4x

x = -20

The first thing you should do to solve this equation would be to distribute.
After distributing it would look like this
4x-12-5x-5=3
Just gonna finish this for no reason
-x-17=3
+17 +17
-x = 20
x = -20
