The tone of this passage and the tone of “The Adventure of the Mysterious Picture” both show an unhinged inner psychological state. The narrator was mentally derange because of the intense agony and cruelty as seen in the mysterious picture. Moreover, the presence of unbalance perception of its surroundings evokes fear, which reflects narrator's inner psychological state.
