In 1803, Napoleon Bonaparte agreed to negotiate an offer to sell the Louisiana Territory to the United States. This would give the United States roughly over 800,000 acres which nearly doubled the country's land holdings at the time. Foreign minister Talleyrand opposed the plan but Napoleon made the decision to sell anyway.
