“The Story of an Hour” (I’m a little iffy on this one)- this story takes place in the late nineteenth century and one can assume (because it is never specified) that it takes place in the US (due to the author being American). This was not a good time for women, as their husbands often controlled their lives. This can be seen in how overjoyed the protagonist is when she finds out her husband is dead (although she feels sorrow at first).

“The Lottery”- this story takes place is a small town of approximately 300. This is a big factor in the lottery itself, as the small group shows mob mentality. Simply put, this means that one can abandon their reason if everyone around him does as well. This keeps the lottery running, as no one questions the actual impact it has on the harvest.
