Leona spent 35.98 at the mall. She bought a T-shirt and a book. The book cost 18.25. How much did the T-shirt cost?

So that would mean you subtract 18.25 from 35.98 to find out how much is the shirt costs, since the book is 18.25, and the leftover can only be how much the shirt costs.

35.98 - 18.25 = 17.73

She spent $17.73 on that shirt.
