How did the Maori people eat during the tattoo process?

A full-face tattoo took a long time to complete, and the tattooist had to study his subject’s facial structure before determining their approach. Māori tattooing could be extremely painful. Those recovering from recent tattoos could not eat solid foods, and instead they consumed liquid food and water through a wooden funnel. Care was taken so that the liquids did not touch the healing skin.

They did not eat solid food during tattoo process. Liquid food and water was drained into a tube, that is made of wood, to ensure that prevent foodstuffs from contaminating the swollen skin. This was the only way the tattooed person could eat until the wounds healed.
