How to determine if a pair of equations are parallel perpendicular, or neither?

Two parallel lines have the same slope. So, calculate the slope of each equation / line and compare the slopes.

If two lines are perpendicular, then their slopes are negative reciprocals of one another. If, for example, one of the two slopes is 5, then the slope of a perpendicular line would be -1/5.

If you have the equations of two straight lines and can find a single point (solution) at which the lines cross, then the lines are neither parallel nor perpendicular.

Step-by-step explanation: In order for 2 lines to be parallel, we need to have the same slope but we also need different y-intercepts. If we have the same y-intercepts, they won't be parallel because they will be the same exact line.

Perpendicular lines just need to have slopes that are opposite reciprocals.
