After its defeat in the Spanish-American war in 1898, Spain ceded The Philippines to the USA in the Treaty of Paris. Filipino nationalist led by Emilio Aguinaldo embarked in a war against The USA, as a consequence 20,000 filipino combatants and over 4200 American died. Over 200,000 filipino also died due to famine, violence and disease. In economic terms it improved the economic situation of the USA in the sense that it had acces to raw materials to affordable prices and the USA broadened its influence in the world.
