Check out the attached image below. It shows the bar graphs of each school. As you can see in figure 2 (Cleveland highschool), the data is more spread out compared figure 1. So this has a higher standard deviation. The standard deviation measures spread. The larger the standard deviation is, the more spread out the values will be. It can be thought of as a measure of how distant each value is from the mean.
