ANSWER: 9x-1
First gather all like terms
(5x+4x) + (-8+7)
Then you add the like terms
(9x) + (-1)
You can’t do anything now because those aren’t like terms so you get 9x + -1 which can also be 9x-1

Answer to your question:
(5x-8)+(4x+7)
=5x+4x -8+7
=9x-1
