While a small percentage of the population earned over $1,200 a year (9%), most of the population earned less than that amount (91%). The late 1800s was a period of transformation for American society. Many people from rural areas move to the city due to the industrialization that was taking place in urban areas. Moreover, immigration increased significantly. All of this led to a rise in poverty.
