The anti-imperialist league was a group formed in 1898 organized around the belief that imperialism violated every right and consent of other nations. Therefore, imperialism would be infringing the ethics of self-government and non-intervention proposed in the United States Declaration of Independence.

Following the previous reasoning, the league fought against the annexation of the Philippines. They claimed thata Abraham Lincoln would not have supported this annexation because this was contrary to his beliefs.

According to Lincoln, no one has the right to govern another without his full consent.
