Two angles are supplementary. The measure of one angle is 4 times the measure of the other angle. What is the measure of the smaller angle

ANSWER

The smaller angle is


y = 36 \degree



.EXPLANATION

Let the angles be

x \: and \: \: y

where y is the smaller angle.
Since they are supplementary, they will add up to 180°.


This implies that,


x + y = 180 \degree...(1)


If one angle is 4 times the other, we can then write the following equation,


x = 4y...(2)


We put equation (2) into equation (1) to get,




4y + y = 180 \degree



5y = 180 \degree


We divide through by 5 to obtain,


y = 36 \degree


This implies that,


x = 4(36)



x = 144 \degree
