4. Is the point on the line, yes or no, show all work for full marks.

a) Line: y = 5x -8
Point (1,-3)
b) Line: y = -3x+1
(T2 each)
Point(-2,-7)

Answer:

a) yes

The point ( 1,-3) lie on the given line y = 5x-8

b) No

The point ( -2,-7) does not lie on the given line y = -3 x +1

Explanation:

Step(i):-

a) Given line y = 5 x - 8 ...(i)

Point ( 1, -3 )

substitute ( 1,-3 ) in equation (i)

-3 = 5(1) - 8

-3 = 5 -8

-3 = -3

∴ The point ( 1,-3) lie on the given line y = 5x-8

b)

Given line y = -3 x +1 ...(i)

Point ( -2, -7 )

substitute (-2, -7 ) in equation (i)

-7 = -3(-2) +1

-7 ≠ 7

The point ( -2,-7) does not lie on the given line y = -3 x +1
