They feared that if the French were too take the Netherlands, they might gain control over Sri Lanka (Prior to the war, the Dutch had colonized Sri Lanka for about 100 - 200 years). However, in 1802 the Treaty of Amiens finally decided the faith, the Dutch would cede Sri Lanka into British control and it therefore then became a British Colony. However, it only became a full Britain fearing nation after the Kingdom of Kandy was crushed during the Kandyan War. This finally happened after the first attempt was repulsed, so it finally happened almost 13 years later after Sri Lanka was formerly declared apart of the British Empire.
