Explanation:

x - 2 = 0 --> x = 2

Using synthetic division:

2 | 4 -5 3 -1

| ↓ 8 6 18

4 3 9 17 ← this is the remainder!

Using remainder theorem:

f(x) = 4x³ - 5x² + 3x - 1

f(2) = 4(2)³ - 5(2)² + 3(2) - 1

= 32 - 20 + 6 - 1

= 17
