You need to get "a" by itself:

(a)/(2)-4=-2 Add 4 on both sides

(a)/(2)-4+4=-2+4

(a)/(2)=2 Multiply 2 on both sides to get "a" by itself

(2)(a)/(2)=2(2)

a = 4
