x=2 ,y=-6

Explanation:

y = -3x

x+y = -4

Substitute -3x for y in the second equation

x+y = -4

x+ (-3x) = -4

Combine like terms

-2x = -4

Divide by -2 on each side

-2x/-2 = -4/-2

x = 2

Now we still need to find y

y = -3x

Substitute x=2

y = -3(2)

y = -6
