Question

Julie buys 2kg of apples and 7 kg of pears for £12.70. The pears cost £1.30 per kilogram. What is the price per kilogram of the apples?

Answer:

1.80 £

Explanation:

find the price of pears

7kg * 1.30£ = 9.1£

from the total price take away the cost of pears

12.70 - 9.1 = 3.6 £ (price of 2Kg of pears)

3.6 : 2 = 1.80 £ ( cost of 1 Kg of apples)

----------------------------------------------

or you can solve with an expression

12.70 - (7 * 1.3) : 2 =

1.80 £

Let's say a stands for apples and p for pears
We know that

p = 1.30
And

2a + 7p = 12.70
In order to know what the cost of an "a" is we have to put the value of the p in the second equation, which means

2a + 7 * (1.30) = 12.70

2a = 12.70 - 9.10

2a = 3.60
And

a = 1.80
The price of per kilo for apples is 1.80
