Sixteen students in a drama club want to attend a play. the tick price is $35 for each student, and the transportation and meals for everyone will cost $960.

To pay for the trip, the students design sweatshirts to sell for a profit of $19 per sweatshirt. If each sells the same number of sweatshirts, how many sweatshirts must each student sell so that there will be enough money to pay for the entire cost of the trip?

Answer:

5 Sweatshirts Per Person

Explanation:

Here are my steps.

1. The ticket price is $35 per student, and you have 16 students total, so ($35*16) = $560. This is the price for tickets for everyone.

2. Take the $560 we just got, and add $960 (Meals and transportation). This gives us the total cost for everyone for the trip (Both Tickets and meals). 560+960=$1520

3. So, we have to make $1520, and each sweatshirt is $19. To find out how many sweatshirts everyone must sell, we take 1520 divided by 19. 1520/19=80

4. We know now that the group must sell 80 sweatshirts to fund the trip. Your problem tells you that "If each sells the same number of sweatshirts" so this means we have to share the 80 sweatshirts to sell, with the 16 students in the group. Divide! 80/16 = 5 Sweatshirts per person.

---

If you feel so inclined, you can check your work. 5 sweatshirts times $19 is $95 raised per person, then multiply by 16 people... $1520! Which was the result we got for the total cost for everyone in step 2. Hope this helps!
