Or you can solve this system algebraically. Express x from the first equation


x=y-6

and substitute it into the second equation:


5(y-6)+3y=24,\\ \\5y-30+3y=24,\\ \\8y=54,\\ \\y=(54)/(8)=(27)/(4)=6.75\approx 7.

Then


x=6.75-6=0.75\approx 1.
