Read this excerpt from We Beat the Street. "Well, I know Mrs. Silly String would never believe it, but I'd really like to be a teacher," Rameck admitted. "So kids not even born yet can do to you what we did to our teachers?" Sampson asked with a laugh. Rameck sighed. "No, 'cause I know what it's like to be a kid who needs more but doesn't know how to ask for it. Only a few teachers know how to reach out to kids like me. I could do that." What causes Rameck to think about becoming a teacher? His accomplishments and successes as a high school student his understanding of the challenges that young people often face his desire to surprise and please his high school teachers his desire to treat students in the same way that he has been treated

The answer is:

his understanding of the challenges that young people often face.

In "We Beat the Street," the author Sharon M. Draper tells the story of three friends, George, Sampson and Rameck, and their struggle to finish school and become professionals. Raised in a problematic neighborhood and family, Rameck considers becoming a teacher and is conscious of young people's endless confrontation against a violent environment with crime and drugs.
