Average = (f(x_2)-f(x_1))/(x_2 - x_1)

Here x1=-4 and x2= 8

Lets find f(x1) and f(x2)


f(x)=-0.5(x-8)^2-2


f(-4)=-0.5(-4-8)^2-2=-74


f(8)=-0.5(8-8)^2-2=-2

now we plug in all the values in the formula


Average = (f(x_2)-f(x_1))/(x_2 - x_1)


Average = (-2-(-74))/(8-(-4))


Average = (72)/(12)=6

Average rate of change = 6
