Farmer Fran is harvesting her crop of pomegranates. We don’t know when she started, but at 10:00 A.M., she had already harvested 2 acres. When we checked at noon, she had harvested a total of 9 acres. What is Fran’s average rate of harvesting? (A reminder of the instructions: Besides showing your work, your answer must include correct units of measure.)

Answer:

r = 3.5 acre/hour

Explanation:

Rate of Change

Farmer Fran had harvested 2 acres of pomegranates at 10:00 A.M. At noon (12:00 P.M.) she had harvested 9 acres.

From both times, 2 hours had passed. During that time, she harvested 9-2=7 acres.

The rate of harvesting is:

r=(7)/(2)\ acre/hour

Or, expressed in decimal:

r = 3.5 acre/hour
