Answer:

x + x+5 = 20

2x + 5 = 20

2x = 15

x =7.5 and

x + 5 = 12.5

The pieces are 7.5 and 12.5 feet long.

EDITED ANSWER I mistyped the equation. The 20 foot board is cut into two pieces so that the second piece is 5 feet longer than twice the length of the first piece how long is the first piece

x + (2x +5) = 20

3x +5 = 20

3x = 15

x = 5 feet

Second board is twice as long as shorter board plus 5 feet.

Second board = 2 * 5 + 5 which equals 15

The boards are 5 and 15 feet in length.
