Although these speech figures are used to compare various things, here are some simple rules that help you differentiate between metaphor, simile, and analogy. A resemblance is to suggest that anything is like something else. Sometimes, a metaphor poetically suggests that everything is something else. A simile is a metaphor of a kind.

Simile is using the words “like” or “as”. So a simile is “you look like Shrek.” A metaphor is direct so it’d be like saying “ you are shrek.” Hyperbole is an exaggeration so it’s like saying “my bag weighs a hundred pounds I’m so tired”
