Enacted in 1867 and in force from that year until 1887, the Tenure of Office Act was intended as a means to restrict or limit the power of the President of the United States of America to remove certain office-holders who had been appointed with Senate approval without express approval from the US Senate.

The Law was firmly opposed by then US President Andrew Johnson and it was later repealed completely by Congress in 1887.
