Historically, women have, in most societies been subjected to the wills of their fathers, husbands, brothers etc. To be subjected to anybody's will other than one's own is clearly, a form of slavery.

Only until recent times have women in most developed countries obtained the legal right to vote, divorce, own property or even choose their own husbands or mates. Because all these instances involve choice, it can be said that women up until recent times have been slaves, since these choices were taken away from them.
