Okay, so basically write a proportion

5 inches/per year

Then, find out how many inches are in 1 2/3 feet

1 2/3 = 1 8/12

Meaning there 1 2/3 feet is 1 foot and 8 inches. We know a foot is 12 inches. so then you just add 12 + 8 which is 20

Now going back to your proportion

5 inches/ per year =20 inches/x years

We know 5 goes into 20 4 times. Meaning to get to 20, your'e going to have to multiply the numerator by 4. But whatever you do to the numerator, you must do to the denominator. So multiply 1 x 4 which is 4 meaning it is going to take 4 years for the tree to grow 1 2/3 feet.

(1 & 2/3) ft = (1 ft) + (2/3 ft)

(1 & 2/3) ft = 12 inches + 12*(2/3) inches

(1 & 2/3) ft = 12 inches + 8 inches

(1 & 2/3) ft = 20 inches

If the tree grows 5 inches per year, then it will take 4 years to get to 20 inches since 5*4 = 20. You can also divide to get 20/5 = 4.

So it takes 4 years for the tree to grow 1&2/3 feet tall.
