The BALEK SCALES is a story written by Heinrich Boll.

As the story unfolds the reader can perceive the injustice that is being committed. The type of injustice could be described as social:the main differences being between the rich and the poor.

The main conflict in this short story is that the Balek family had been unfair with the villagers. The Balek were economically well-off and well-educated ; that was why they were in charge of the village´s scale. Consequently, they took advantagen of this benefit and deceived the local people by weighing the spices badly.

The Balek family continued with this unfair treatment until one of the characters realized and discovered the truth.
