Explanation:

The altitude will be a line perpendicular the the opposite side DE.

The slope of DE = (3 - -1) / (3 - -5)

= 4/8 = 1/2

So the slope of the altitude = -1 / 1/2 = -2

Thus the equation of the altitude through F (1, -5) can be found using the point-slope form y - y1 = m(x - x1):-

y - -5 = -2(x - 1)

y + 5 = -2x + 2

y = -2x + 2 - 5

y = -2x - 3 (answer)
