a certain painting has an area of 216 square inches. a second painting has dimensions twice the size of the first. what is the area of the second painting.

a. 864 sq. in.
b. 432 sq in
c. 108 sq in
d 54 sq in.

I am confused cause I think I'm doing it wrong. I dont know what to multiply 216 by. I got from my math 432, but my teacher did something wrong and I thing with what happend 864 is the answer. please help.

I think your teacher is correct. If you assume the painting is a square, then each side would be square root of 216, or 14.7
Then if you double those dimensions, your new painting would have a side of 29.4. Now square that for area and you get 864.

This would be because it says that the dimensions are twice the size not twice the area. So if we do the sq. root of 216 we get the number 14.696..

You would have to figure out an approx. dimension size. I took the number 15.25 and 14.20 since they got me the closest with out a crazy long number.

You would then multiply the number by 2 to double the "original" dimensions

Getting 30.50 and 28.40 you would then find the area which would be 866.2 the closest number would be 864.

It is all approximation since I do not know the original dimensions
