Step-by-step explanation:

What causes sound? it is cause by the mechanical vibrations of various elastic bodies.

Can you hear in outer space? No, you cannot. Sound travels through the vibration of atoms and molecules in mediums such as sir. In space, where there is no air, sound has no way to travel.

Name the three mediums sound waves can travel in? gas, liquid, and solid. Sound waves travel the slowest through gases, faster through liquids, and fastest through solids.

Define transverse waves. A transverse wave is a wave in which particles move perpendicular to the direction of the wave propagation.

Define longitudinal waves. A longitudinal wave is a wave in which the particles move in a direction parallel to the wave propagation.

How is frequency defined in relation to pitch? The pitch of sound corresponds to the frequency at which the air molecules carrying the sound vibrate at. The higher the pitch, the higher the frequency. An increase of one octave in pitch corresponds to a frequency twice as high. An increase of one half-step corresponds to an increase in frequency by a factor of the 12th root of 2 (the number that if raised to the 12th power gives 2).

Describe the Doppler Effect? The doppler effect describes the changes in frequency of any kind of sound or light wave produced by a moving source with respect to an observer.

Define pitch. Pitch can be described as the sensation of a frequency. A high pitch sound corresponds to a high frequency sound wave and a low pitch sound corresponds to a low frequency sound wave.

Define a sound. A sound wave is a pressure wave. They can be thought of as fluctuations in pressure with respect to time. Sound waves are transverse waves. It is caused when an object vibrates, it causes movement in surrounding air molecules. These molecules bump into the molecules close to them, causing them to vibrate creating a chain reaction. This “chain reaction” movement, called sound waves
