Luster is defined as the property of a mineral by which the light is reflected from the mineral's surface. It is a physical property and it differs from mineral to mineral. This property helps in the identification of minerals.

There are mainly two types of luster. They are as follows-

(a) Metallic luster- When a mineral has a shiny appearance, then it is called a metallic luster. For example, Pyrite.

(b) Non-metallic luster- When a mineral does not have any shiny appearance, then it is regarded as a non-metallic luster. For example, Quartz.

The non-metallic luster is again divided into several types, such as pearly, earthy, dull, silky, resinous and vitreous luster.
