The theory of continental drift proposed by Alfred Wegener was initially not accepted because of certain limitations. He was not able to give the appropriate reasons for the drifting of the continents. According to him, the continents moved because of the continuous earth's rotation as well as due to the tidal effects. This were not the proper explanation and so was not accepted.
In addition to that, the theory also suggested that the edges of the continents were also perfectly matched with the nearby continents, but it was actually the edges of the continental shelves that perfectly fits one another.
This limitations were later overcome by the theory of plate tectonic, that suggested the mantle convection current that forces the plates to move from one place to another.
