The answer is cellular respiration.

Cellular respiration can be aerobic or anaerobic. In anaerobic respiration, this occurs in the cytosol where glucose is turned to pyruvate in the glycolysis cycle. In aerobic respiration pyruvate is turned to CO2 and H2O in the Krebs cycle. In both cycles, a positive net ATP is produced which is used by cells to power biochemical processes.
