This layer of the earth is the mantle. It is fluid because the rocks in the region have plasticity. The rocks in the region are heated from below by the core. The hotter bottom layers of the mantle begin to rise while the cooler upper layers sink to the bottom. These convection currents are responsible for the tectonic plate movement of the earth’s crust.
