Average rate of change it a slope. slope=y2-y1 divided by x2-x1.
on a linear function the average rate of change it rise over run(find two points, count then divide it)
horizontal line has a slope and its 0
vertical line has no slope

Hope this helps!

When you calculate the average rate of change of a function, you are finding the slope of the secant line between the two points. f(x) = x2 and f(x + h) = (x + h)2 Therefore, the slope of the secant line between any two points on this function is 2x + h.
