consider the motion of the bowling ball along the vertical direction after it is thrown off.

assuming down direction as positive.

Y = vertical displacement of the bowling ball = distance traveled downward = d

a = acceleration of the ball = acceleration due to gravity = 9.8 m/s²

t = time of travel = 3.0 s

v₀ = initial velocity of the ball along the vertical direction = 0 m/s

using the equation

Y = v₀ t + (0.5) a t²

d = 0 (3.0) + (0.5) (9.8) (3.0)²

d = (0.5) (9.8) (9.0)

d = 44.1 m
